PDF to Quiz - From Any PDF to a Working Quiz in Seconds
Drop in a PDF. Formswrite reads it, generates questions, and exports a quiz - to Google Forms, Canvas, Moodle, Quizizz, Kahoot, Blackboard, or 25+ other platforms. Works on digital PDFs and scanned PDFs (OCR runs automatically). You review every question before it leaves the editor.
What kinds of PDFs work
Formswrite is designed for the PDFs people actually want to turn into quizzes:
| PDF type | How it is handled |
|---|---|
| Textbook chapters | The most common input. Section headers become question groups, paragraphs become question sources. |
| Training manuals and SOPs | Compliance training, employee onboarding, procedure docs. Bullet points and numbered steps become assessment items naturally. |
| Research papers and articles | Abstracts and findings become recall questions; methods and discussion become application questions. |
| Lecture handouts and slide PDFs | Bullet-point slides convert cleanly. If the PDF came from a .pptx export, speaker notes (when present) get weighted heavily by the generator. |
| Scanned PDFs | OCR runs automatically. Textbook-quality scans work reliably; very low-resolution scans may need cleanup. |
| Multi-language PDFs | English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, and more. Quiz output matches the source language. |
| Math-heavy PDFs | Equations are recognized and converted to MathML so they render correctly in the quiz player. |
| Image-heavy PDFs | Diagrams and figures are preserved - embedded directly into the exported quiz package. |
| Long PDFs (100+ pages) | Formswrite generates questions distributed proportionally across the document instead of front-loading. |
If you have it as a PDF, Formswrite can read it.
What you get out
Three different outputs depending on what you actually need:
1. A quiz file for your LMS or quiz platform
The most common path. Pick a target - Google Forms, Canvas, Moodle, Quizizz, Kahoot, Blackboard, Brightspace, Schoology, and 20+ other platforms. Formswrite outputs the file format that platform accepts (QTI for LMSes, native imports for quiz platforms).
2. A standalone quiz link
If you do not have an LMS, Formswrite hosts the quiz at a clean URL. Share it with students or trainees, get response data back.
3. A printable PDF quiz
Export the generated quiz back to PDF (with or without answer key). Useful for in-class paper quizzes, take-home tests, and certifications that require paper records.
How it works (PDF → quiz in 4 steps)
Step 1 - Drop in the PDF
Drag and drop, or pick from Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox. Formswrite extracts text and structure. For scanned PDFs, OCR runs automatically - no separate step.
Step 2 - Choose the quiz mix
How many questions? What types? Some realistic mixes by use case:
- Textbook chapter quiz - 20 questions, 70% recall / 20% application / 10% analysis, mostly multiple choice
- Training assessment - 15 questions, mostly multiple choice + 3 short answer for procedural understanding
- Game-show style (Kahoot/Quizizz) - 20 questions, 4-option multiple choice only, no essays
- End-of-unit exam - 30 questions across all sections, mix of types, points proportional to section length
Step 3 - Review every question
The review pane shows each generated question with:
- The question stem and answer choices
- The correct answer pre-marked
- The exact passage from your PDF the question was drawn from - page number included so you can verify in context
- A confidence score flagging questions the generator is uncertain about
You approve, edit, or delete. Nothing leaves the editor without your sign-off.
Step 4 - Export
Pick the format (Google Forms, Canvas QTI, Moodle XML, GIFT, Quizizz, Kahoot, PDF, etc.) and download. Most exports happen in under 10 seconds.
PDF-specific advantages
A few things Formswrite does differently for PDF inputs:
Scanned PDF handling
Many PDFs in the wild are scanned - textbook chapters from a library, old training manuals, archived exam papers. Formswrite OCRs them automatically. Most other "PDF to quiz" tools fail silently on scanned input or require you to convert to text first.
Equation extraction
PDFs from STEM textbooks have equations in image format or in PDF math primitives. Formswrite recognizes both and converts them to MathML - so the quiz player displays them as real equations, not blurry screenshots.
Page-level traceability
Every generated question is linked back to the exact page of the source PDF it came from. When you (or a reviewer, or a curriculum lead) wants to verify accuracy, you can jump straight to the source rather than re-reading the whole document.
Large-PDF batching
100-page training manuals or full textbook chapters don't get front-loaded - the generator distributes questions proportionally across the whole document, so the assessment covers the full material, not just the first 20 pages.
Image and figure preservation
Diagrams, anatomical drawings, chemical structures, charts - preserved as images in the exported quiz package. They render in Google Forms, Canvas, Moodle, Quizizz, etc. without you re-uploading.
How Formswrite's PDF to Quiz compares to other tools
| Tool | Scanned PDF (OCR) | Multi-LMS export | Math / equation handling | Image preservation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Formswrite | Yes (automatic) | 30+ platforms | MathML conversion | Embedded into export |
| pdftoquiz.com | Limited | None - own player only | Basic | Basic |
| pdfquiz.com | Limited | None - own player only | Basic | Basic |
| dende.ai | Yes | Limited | Yes | Limited |
| Quizgecko | Yes | A few exports | Yes | Yes |
| Smallpdf question generator | Yes | Native PDF / share link | Basic | Basic |
| Magicform PDF to Quiz | Yes | Native | Limited | Limited |
| Jotform AI Quiz Generator | Limited | Jotform only | Limited | Limited |
| Remnote PDF to Quiz | Yes | Remnote only | Yes | Limited |
The export-target list is usually the decisive difference. If the school or organization you work for uses anything other than your current "PDF to quiz" tool's own platform, you have to re-export elsewhere - Formswrite is built for that.
Use cases - real workflows
A high-school teacher converting a textbook chapter to a quiz
Drop in the chapter PDF (often a scanned copy from the print textbook). Pick "20 questions, mostly recall, multiple choice only." Review takes ~7 minutes. Export to Google Forms. Quiz is shared with the class before the next period.
A university professor turning a research paper into a discussion quiz
PDF of the assigned paper goes in. Pick "10 questions, application-heavy, mix of MC and short answer." Review takes 12 minutes. Export to Canvas as a QTI .zip. Students answer before class so the professor knows what to focus the discussion on.
A corporate L&D team turning compliance training into an assessment
Compliance training PDF (45 pages) gets uploaded. Pick "30 questions distributed across the document, all multiple choice, 75% pass threshold." Review takes 20 minutes. Export to the company LMS via QTI. Same PDF + same quiz used across 12 country offices.
A tutor preparing a take-home practice quiz
Student's chapter PDF in. "15 questions, 60% recall + 40% application." Review takes 5 minutes. Export to PDF with answer key. Print 1 copy of each version for the next session.
A trainer making a Kahoot from a slide deck PDF
Slide deck exported as PDF, dropped in. "25 multiple choice questions, no short answer, fast-paced." Review takes 8 minutes. Export to Kahoot file format. Plays in real time at the end of the training session.
Common questions about PDF to Quiz
Can I use this on scanned PDFs?
Yes. OCR runs automatically. The quality depends on scan resolution - anything that is readable to a human eye usually converts cleanly.
Is the PDF to Quiz tool free?
Yes - single quizzes are free. Bulk and API access is paid.
Will it work on password-protected PDFs?
No - you need to remove the password from the PDF before uploading. Formswrite does not break PDF passwords by design.
How long can the PDF be?
The free tier accepts PDFs up to ~50 pages. Paid tiers handle 500+ page documents. For very long documents, the generator distributes questions proportionally across sections so the entire material is covered.
Does it work on PDFs in languages other than English?
Yes. English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, and others. Output quiz language matches the input.
Will the generated questions test what I actually want to test?
This is the right question to ask. The review step is what makes the workflow trustworthy - you see every question with the source passage and decide what makes it in. The generator targets the cognitive level you specified (recall / application / analysis), but final judgment is yours.
Can I generate quizzes from multiple PDFs at once?
Yes - bulk mode lets you upload a folder of PDFs and get a quiz per PDF. For programmatic bulk use, see the Formswrite API and the bulk-convert guide.
Will Formswrite remember my PDF / quiz after I leave?
Quizzes and source PDFs are saved to your workspace so you can come back and edit them later. You can also delete them - your data, your choice.
Does it preserve images from the PDF?
Yes. Diagrams, charts, anatomical drawings - embedded into the exported quiz file. They render in Google Forms, Canvas, Moodle, Quizizz, etc. without re-uploading.
How accurate is the AI?
On factual recall from textbook source material, question-level accuracy is consistently above 90%. The review step is there for the remaining 10%.
What is the difference between a "PDF to quiz converter" and a "PDF to quiz generator"?
A converter assumes the quiz is already written inside the PDF (e.g., a previous exam saved as PDF) and just changes the format. A generator creates questions from any text - even raw source material with no questions in it. Formswrite does both: if the PDF already has questions, it parses them; if not, it generates them from the content.
