Canvas Quiz Converter: Turn Word Docs, PDFs, and Text into Canvas Quizzes

Canvas Quiz Converter: From Word, PDF, or Text to a Canvas Quiz in Minutes

Every instructor who uses Canvas LMS has been here. You wrote the quiz in Word - or pulled a PDF from a textbook publisher, or jotted questions into Google Docs during office hours - and now Canvas wants you to retype each question, mark the correct answer, and configure point values from scratch. There is a faster way.
This guide shows how to use the Formswrite Canvas quiz converter to turn any document into a Canvas-ready quiz, including the Canvas-specific import steps so it lands in your course the first time.

What the converter does

You give Formswrite a document. It returns a QTI 2.1 package - the format Canvas natively imports under Settings → Import Course Content. The conversion handles:
Source formatWhat you get in Canvas
Word (.docx)A full Canvas quiz with all questions, correct answers, and point values
PDFSame - OCR runs on scanned PDFs automatically
Google DocSame - connect Drive once, pick any doc
Plain textPaste raw text and the parser detects questions, answers, and correct choices
CSV / ExcelUseful for pre-structured question banks
ImagesYes - diagrams and figures are preserved in the QTI package
It supports every question type Canvas Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes accept: multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false, fill in the blank, short answer, essay, and matching.

Why a converter beats manual entry

The Canvas quiz editor was designed for creating questions, not for transcribing them. For a typical 30-question exam, manual entry takes 25-45 minutes of clicking and typing - multiply that across a 4-quiz course and a department of 30 instructors and you have a semester's worth of lost evening time.
A QTI-based converter does the same work in under a minute per quiz. Formswrite ranks consistently among the fastest options because it skips the "format your document like our template" step that most converters require.

Step-by-step: convert a Word doc to a Canvas quiz

1. Format the document loosely

Formswrite parses unstructured documents, so you do not need a strict template. A typical structure that works well:
1. What is the capital of France? a. Berlin b. Madrid c. Paris* d. Rome 2. Which gas do plants absorb during photosynthesis? a. Oxygen b. Carbon dioxide* c. Nitrogen d. Hydrogen
The asterisk marks the correct answer. The parser also recognizes bold, color highlights, and "(correct)" labels - use whichever convention you already use.

2. Upload to Formswrite

Go to formswrite.com, sign in, drag your file into the workspace. The parser shows every question it extracted with the correct answer pre-selected. Fix anything that looks off - inline editing, no document round-trips.

3. Export as QTI 2.1

Click Export → QTI 2.1 (.zip). The file downloads to your computer.

4. Import into Canvas

  1. Open your Canvas course → Settings → Import Course Content.
  2. Content Type: QTI .zip file.
  3. Source: select the file Formswrite gave you.
  4. Click Import. The quiz appears under Quizzes → Question Banks within a minute.
  5. Drag the question bank into a new quiz and publish.

Canvas exam converter: handling longer assessments

The same converter handles full midterms and finals. Two tips for long exams:
  • Section headers ("Section 1: Cellular Biology", "Section 2: Genetics") become Canvas question groups, so randomization works per-section.
  • Point values in the document - e.g., (2 points) after the question stem - are carried into Canvas. If you omit them, every question is worth 1 point.
For exams that include images of diagrams, anatomical drawings, or chemical structures: Formswrite embeds them into the QTI package so they render in the Canvas quiz player without you re-uploading.

Converting plain text into a Canvas quiz

If you do not have a Word doc - say, you have questions in a chat thread, an email, or a notes app - Formswrite has a paste-as-text input. Drop the text in, the parser does the rest. This is the same flow ranking for "text to canvas quiz converter" searches: you do not need a document at all.

Common Canvas import errors and how to avoid them

"Could not parse QTI manifest" - this usually means the QTI file was generated by a tool that does not match Canvas's expected manifest layout. Formswrite generates Canvas-compatible manifests by default.
Questions imported but without correct answers - the source document did not flag correct answers in a way the parser could detect. Re-export with explicit asterisks (*) or use Formswrite's inline editor to mark correct answers before exporting.
Images missing after import - the QTI package omitted them. Confirm "Include media" was checked at export time.
Imported into Classic Quizzes when you wanted New Quizzes - Canvas decides this at import time, not at export. In Canvas, choose Migrate to New Quizzes after import.

Bulk converting many quizzes

For department-wide migrations (30+ quizzes), the Formswrite API does the same conversion programmatically - see the bulk-convert guide for a working script.

FAQ

Does this work for Canvas New Quizzes? Yes. The QTI 2.1 output imports into both Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. Canvas decides which engine to use based on your course settings.
Will the converter preserve question groups (random pools)? Yes - if your source document uses section headers, Formswrite generates QTI question groups that Canvas turns into random-pull pools.
Can I convert a Canvas quiz back to Word? Yes - Canvas exports its quizzes as QTI under Settings → Export Course Content. Upload that QTI to Formswrite and export it as Word, Google Doc, or PDF.
Is there a free tier? Yes - single quizzes are free. Bulk and API access is paid.
Will this work with Canvas Free for Teacher accounts? Yes. The QTI import path is available on every Canvas tier.
