Step-by-step: convert a Word doc to a Canvas quiz
1. Format the document loosely
Formswrite parses unstructured documents, so you do not need a strict template. A typical structure that works well:

The asterisk marks the correct answer. The parser also recognizes bold, color highlights, and "(correct)" labels - use whichever convention you already use.
2. Upload to Formswrite
Go to formswrite.com, sign in, drag your file into the workspace. The parser shows every question it extracted with the correct answer pre-selected. Fix anything that looks off - inline editing, no document round-trips.
3. Export as QTI 2.1
Click Export → QTI 2.1 (.zip). The file downloads to your computer.
4. Import into Canvas
- Open your Canvas course → Settings → Import Course Content.
- Content Type:

- Click Import. The quiz appears under Quizzes → Question Banks within a minute.
- Drag the question bank into a new quiz and publish.
Canvas exam converter: handling longer assessments
The same converter handles full midterms and finals. Two tips for long exams:
- Section headers ("Section 1: Cellular Biology", "Section 2: Genetics") become Canvas question groups, so randomization works per-section.
- Point values in the document - e.g.,
(2 points)after the question stem - are carried into Canvas. If you omit them, every question is worth 1 point.
For exams that include images of diagrams, anatomical drawings, or chemical structures: Formswrite embeds them into the QTI package so they render in the Canvas quiz player without you re-uploading.
Converting plain text into a Canvas quiz

Common Canvas import errors and how to avoid them

Does this work for Canvas New Quizzes?
Yes. The QTI 2.1 output imports into both Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. Canvas decides which engine to use based on your course settings.
Will the converter preserve question groups (random pools)?
Yes - if your source document uses section headers, Formswrite generates QTI question groups that Canvas turns into random-pull pools.
Can I convert a Canvas quiz back to Word?
Yes - Canvas exports its quizzes as QTI under Settings → Export Course Content. Upload that QTI to Formswrite and export it as Word, Google Doc, or PDF.
