Google Forms Send Me a Copy of My Responses: How It Works for Respondents and Creators
"Send me a copy of my responses" is a checkbox that appears at the bottom of a Google Form when the form creator has turned on response receipts with the When requested option. Tick it before you submit and Google emails you a copy of your answers. If the checkbox is missing, the form either sends a copy to everyone automatically or is not set up to send copies at all, and only the form creator can change that.
This guide covers both sides: what respondents can do, and the exact settings creators use for receipts, response editing, the "Your response has been recorded" page, and the submit another response link.
Quick reference: which setting controls what
| What you see or want | Controlled by | Where |
|---|---|---|
| "Send me a copy of my responses" checkbox | Send responders a copy of their response: When requested | Settings, Responses |
| Everyone gets a copy automatically | Send responders a copy of their response: Always | Settings, Responses |
| Email address field or verified email | Collect email addresses | Settings, Responses |
| "Edit your response" link after submitting | Allow response editing | Settings, Responses |
| "Submit another response" link | Show link to submit another response | Settings, Presentation |
| "Your response has been recorded" text | Confirmation message | Settings, Presentation |
| Only one submission per person | Limit to 1 response (requires sign-in) | Settings, Responses |
For respondents: how to get a copy of your answers
If you see the checkbox
Before clicking Submit, tick Send me a copy of my responses. The copy goes to the email address the form collected, either your signed-in Google account email or the address you typed. Check your spam or promotions folder if it does not arrive within a few minutes.
If the form sends copies automatically
When the creator chooses Always, there is no checkbox. Everyone who submits gets a copy by email, so just check your inbox after submitting.
If there is no checkbox and no email
The creator has not turned on response receipts. You have a few options:
- Take a screenshot or save the page as a PDF before submitting. Most browsers can print a page to PDF.
- Look for an Edit your response link on the confirmation page. If the creator allowed response editing, that link lets you reopen and view your submission. Bookmark it.
- Ask the form owner to send your response or to turn on receipts for next time.
I already submitted and did not get a copy
Google Forms does not let respondents request a copy after submitting. If you signed in and the form allows editing, reopening the form link may show your previous answers with an option to edit. Otherwise, only the creator can see your response.
Why "Your response has been recorded" appears
"Your response has been recorded" is the default confirmation message Google Forms shows after a successful submission. It means the form received your answers. Creators can replace it with their own text, so you might see something like "Thanks, your permission slip is in" instead.
For creators: how to turn on response receipts
Step 1: Open the Responses settings
Open the form, click the Settings tab at the top, and expand the Responses section.
Step 2: Choose how to collect email addresses
Set Collect email addresses to one of the options:
- Verified: respondents sign in with a Google account and their email is recorded automatically. Most reliable for receipts.
- Responder input: respondents type an email address. No sign-in is required, but typos mean the copy goes nowhere.
- Do not collect: no email, so no receipts are possible.
Step 3: Turn on Send responders a copy of their response
Next to Send responders a copy of their response, choose:
- When requested: adds the "Send me a copy of my responses" checkbox so each person decides.
- Always: every respondent gets a copy automatically.
This option only appears once email collection is on.
Step 4: Decide whether respondents can edit
Turn on Allow response editing if people should be able to change answers after submitting. They get an Edit your response link on the confirmation page. For graded quizzes, most teachers leave this off so students cannot change answers after seeing feedback.
Step 5: Customize the confirmation page
Expand Presentation. Under the after-submission options, edit the Confirmation message to replace "Your response has been recorded" with something specific, like next steps or a deadline reminder. In the form presentation options, turn Show link to submit another response on or off.
Receipts and privacy
A response receipt contains everything the person entered. For forms with sensitive answers on shared or family devices, think about whether an automatic copy by email is appropriate, and consider When requested instead of Always.
Submit another response: when to show or hide it
The Show link to submit another response setting puts a "Submit another response" link on the confirmation page.
Show it for:
- Sign-in sheets or attendance kiosks on a shared device
- Forms where one person logs several entries, such as reading logs or lab observations
- Event registrations where a parent registers several children
Hide it for:
- Quizzes and tests, so students do not submit twice
- Surveys and votes where each person should respond once
Hiding the link does not stop someone from reopening the form URL. To enforce one submission per person, turn on Limit to 1 response under Responses. This requires respondents to sign in to a Google account, which means people without one cannot respond. The guide on Google Forms limit responses covers the trade-offs.
Response receipts vs email notifications
These are easy to mix up:
- Response receipts go to the respondent, with a copy of their own answers.
- Email notifications for new responses go to the form owner, turned on from the Responses tab menu.
For owner-side alerts, see Google Forms email notifications.
Troubleshooting
The copy never arrived. With Responder input, the address may be mistyped. Check the email column in the Responses tab. With Verified, ask the respondent to check spam and any filters on school accounts.
I cannot find Send responders a copy of their response. Turn on Collect email addresses first. The receipt option depends on it.
Students get their score in the receipt before I finish grading. In quiz settings, set grade release to later, after manual review. See how to release scores in Google Forms.
Respondents say they are forced to sign in. Verified email collection and Limit to 1 response both require sign-in. Switch to Responder input and turn off Limit to 1 response if sign-in is a problem.
Build the form faster
If your questions already exist in a document, Formswrite can turn a Word file, Google Doc, or PDF into a form or quiz, and you finish by choosing the receipt settings above. Try Word to Google Form or the Google Form quiz generator. Google Forms export is on paid plans; the free plan includes Formswrite forms and flashcards.
FAQ
How do I get a copy of my Google Forms responses?
Tick Send me a copy of my responses before submitting, if the form shows it. If the form sends copies to everyone, check your email after submitting. If neither is available, save a screenshot or PDF before you submit.
Why is there no Send me a copy of my responses option?
Either the creator has not turned on response receipts, or they set receipts to Always, which sends a copy to everyone without a checkbox. Only the form creator can change this setting.
Can I get a copy of a Google Form after I submitted it?
Not by requesting a receipt afterward. If the form allows response editing, the Edit your response link or reopening the form while signed in may show your answers. Otherwise, ask the form owner.
What does Your response has been recorded mean?
It is the default Google Forms confirmation message. It means your submission was received. Form creators can replace it with a custom message.
How do I remove the Submit another response link?
Go to Settings, expand Presentation, and turn off Show link to submit another response. To truly prevent repeat submissions, also turn on Limit to 1 response under Responses.
Do response receipts include quiz scores?
Receipts contain the respondent's answers. Whether quiz scores and correct answers are visible depends on your quiz settings for grade release and what respondents can see.
Can respondents get a receipt without signing in?
Yes, if Collect email addresses is set to Responder input. They type an email address, and the copy is sent there. Verified collection requires signing in.
