Formswrite Now Supports LTI 1.3

We are excited to announce that Formswrite now supports LTI 1.3 (Learning Tools Interoperability), the industry standard for integrating external tools with Learning Management Systems. Teachers and students can now launch Formswrite directly from their LMS with a single click — no separate login, no extra accounts.
What Is LTI 1.3?
LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) is a standard developed by IMS Global that allows LMS platforms to securely launch external tools. LTI 1.3 is the latest version, built on modern security standards including OpenID Connect (OIDC) authentication and JWT tokens. Unlike the older LTI 1.1, no passwords or shared secrets are exchanged between systems.
With LTI 1.3, your institution connects Formswrite as a trusted tool within your LMS. Once configured, any teacher or student can open Formswrite directly from their course — just like any other built-in tool.
Why LTI 1.3 Matters
Single Sign-On
Teachers and students click the Formswrite activity in their LMS and are immediately logged in. No separate account creation, no password to remember, no switching between tabs to copy-paste quiz files.
Automatic User Provisioning
When a user launches Formswrite through LTI for the first time, their account is automatically created based on the information provided by the LMS. No manual onboarding needed.
Secure by Design
LTI 1.3 uses public/private key verification through JWKS endpoints. All launch tokens are cryptographically signed and verified. State and nonce parameters prevent replay attacks. Everything runs over HTTPS.
Context-Aware
Formswrite knows which course and user is launching the tool. This means quiz content can be associated with the right course context from the start.
Supported LMS Platforms
Formswrite works with any LMS that supports LTI 1.3, including:
- Canvas — Instructure Canvas with LTI 1.3 Developer Keys
- Blackboard — Blackboard Learn with LTI 1.3 tool registration
- Moodle — Version 3.7+ with LTI 1.3 support
- Brightspace (D2L) — Desire2Learn Brightspace LTI Advantage
- Schoology — Schoology with LTI 1.3 app configuration
- Sakai — Sakai CLE with External Tools support
Any LMS that implements the LTI 1.3 standard will work with Formswrite.
How It Works
Setting up LTI takes about 5 minutes and involves two steps:
Step 1: Register Formswrite in Your LMS
In your LMS admin panel, add Formswrite as an external LTI 1.3 tool using these URLs:
| Setting | URL |
|---|---|
| Tool URL / Launch URL | https://api.formswrite.com/api/lti/callback |
| Login Initiation URL | https://api.formswrite.com/api/lti/login |
| Public Keyset URL (JWKS) | https://api.formswrite.com/api/lti/jwks |
| Redirection URI | https://api.formswrite.com/api/lti/callback |
Your LMS will generate a Client ID and provide its own platform URLs.
Step 2: Register Your LMS in Formswrite
In Formswrite, go to LTI Platforms in the sidebar and click Add Platform. Enter the platform details from your LMS (issuer URL, client ID, auth endpoints, JWKS URL). Click save, and you are connected.
Step 3: Launch from Your Course
Add Formswrite as an activity in any course. Teachers and students can now click it to open Formswrite directly — authenticated, in context, ready to go.
What You Can Do with LTI + Formswrite
