Maya keeps bringing curiosity and effort to our class. Maya reads with expression and accuracy, and she chooses challenging books on her own. Maya shows a positive attitude toward schoolwork. Maya understands the steps of a procedure and is working on accuracy with calculations. A next step for Maya is reading word problems twice and underlining what is asked. I am excited to see Maya keep growing next term.

## How to use the generator for a whole class

1. Set the grade level, the report period and the tone once. Warm suits elementary families, formal suits secondary reports and schools that ask for it.
2. Pick your system’s character limit. Many student information systems cap comments at 250 or 500 characters.
3. For each student, type the first name, choose pronouns and set a level for each area. Copy the version that sounds most like the student, or press Shuffle for new wording.
4. Add one sentence only you could write: a project, a moment, a book the student loved. That detail is what parents remember.

## What a strong report card comment includes

Parents read report card comments to answer three questions: how is my child doing, what are they good at, and what can we do next. A comment that answers all three in plain language is more useful than a long one. The generator always builds the comment in that order: an opening, a specific strength or status for each area, a next step for the area that needs it most, and a closing that fits the time of year.

Here is an example for a fourth grader, mid-year, warm tone: “I am proud of the progress Maya has made this term. Maya draws thoughtful inferences from what she reads and backs them up with evidence from the text. Maya understands the steps of a procedure and is working on accuracy with calculations. Five minutes of math fact practice each day will help Maya solve problems faster. Keep up the great work, Maya!”

## Do and don’t

- **Do** describe behavior and skills (“starts work right away”), not character (“is lazy”).
- **Do** give one next step a family can act on at home.
- **Do** keep the tone honest: a student who needs support should not read as excelling.
- **Don’t** compare the student with classmates or siblings.
- **Don’t** use jargon such as “DRA level” or “standard 4.NBT.5” without explaining it.
- **Don’t** paste identical comments for every student; Shuffle exists for that.

## Privacy

The generator is a static page: the sentence bank ships with the page and everything is assembled on your device. No name, level or comment is sent to Formswrite or to an AI model. Check your school’s policy before pasting student information into any online tool, including this one.

## Report card comment generator FAQ

How does the report card comment generator work?

Choose the student’s name and pronouns, the grade level, the report period, the tone and your character limit, then tick the subjects or skills to cover and pick a level for each. The generator assembles an opening, one sentence per area, a next step for the area that needs it most and a closing, and gives you three alternative versions.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It is free and needs no account. It runs entirely in your browser from a bank of sentences written by teachers and editors, so nothing you type, including the student’s name, is sent to a server.

Does it use AI?

No. Every sentence comes from a hand-written bank, combined by rules, which keeps the comments predictable and appropriate for parents. Shuffle changes the wording, so a class of 30 does not get identical comments. Always read each comment and add one detail only you know about the student.

How do I fit my school’s character limit?

Pick 250, 500, 750 or 1,000 characters. If the comment is too long, the generator leaves out the areas you ticked last and tells you which ones, so the most important areas always stay. The count under each version includes spaces, as most student information systems do.

Can I write comments for a whole class quickly?

Yes. Set the grade level, period and tone once, then for each student change the name, pronouns and levels and copy the version you like. Leave the name blank to get a \[Name\] placeholder if you prefer to merge names in later.

What makes a good report card comment?

A good comment names something specific the student does well, one clear area to grow with a next step, and a positive, honest tone a parent can act on. Avoid labels such as lazy or weak, avoid comparing students, and keep jargon out.

Can Formswrite also grade essays and write feedback?

Yes. The Formswrite AI essay grader scores essays against your rubric and drafts glow and grow feedback from each essay, which you review and approve before students see it. Every account grades 30 essays a month for free.
