# Use Formswrite in Claude and ChatGPT

The Formswrite connector lets an AI assistant work in your Formswrite account: convert a document into a quiz (including a file on your computer), create a quiz from a description, edit the questions, export to Google Forms, Moodle, Canvas, Kahoot and 36 more formats, and publish a hosted form. It speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and signs you in with your Formswrite account. You never paste a password or a token into the assistant.

## Connect

The server address is `https://mcp.formswrite.com/mcp`. You need a Formswrite account. The Free plan works.

1.  Nova

    ### Claude

    Open Customize, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector and enter the server address.

2.  ### ChatGPT

    In the connector settings, add a connector with the server address and choose OAuth as the authentication.

3. ### Sign in and approve

    A Formswrite page opens. Sign in if asked, check the account and the permissions shown, and choose Approve.

Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http formswrite https://mcp.formswrite.com/mcp

Cursor and other clients that read a JSON configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "formswrite": { "url": "https://mcp.formswrite.com/mcp" }
  }
}

## What it can access

The approval page lists exactly what the assistant asked for. The connector acts as you, only on your own forms, and within your plan's limits.

- View your forms, quizzes and their questions `forms:read`
- Create, edit, export and publish forms and quizzes in your account `forms:write`
- View your document conversions and their status `jobs:read`

It cannot see your password, your billing details or other people's forms, and it cannot delete your account. Access lasts until you disconnect it under [Settings, API](/dashboard/settings/api) in Formswrite, which stops it at once.

## Things to ask

- Find my photosynthesis quiz in Formswrite and show me its questions.
- Convert this Google Doc into a quiz: https://docs.google.com/document/d/... and tell me when it is ready.
- Create a 5-question multiple choice quiz about the water cycle for grade 6, with an answer key.
- In my "Cell biology" quiz, make question 3 required and add a fourth answer option.
- Export my "Unit 4 review" quiz to Kahoot, then publish it as a Formswrite form and give me the link.

## Documentation server

Formswrite has a second, separate MCP server for its documentation at `https://docs.formswrite.com/mcp`. It searches and reads the Formswrite guides and API reference, needs no sign-in, and cannot see or change anything in your account. Add it next to the connector above when you want the assistant to answer questions about how Formswrite works.

## For developers and coding agents

The public repository [github.com/formswrite/formswrite-mcp](https://github.com/formswrite/formswrite-mcp) holds the instructions for AI coding agents (AGENTS.md and SKILL.md) and a small bridge for MCP clients that can only run a local server. The bridge needs an API token from [Settings, API](/dashboard/settings/api) in the `FORMSWRITE_API_TOKEN` environment variable:

npx -y github:formswrite/formswrite-mcp

## Your data

The connector sends the assistant only what a tool returns: the forms you ask about, their questions, and the status of your conversions. Documents you convert are processed by Formswrite the same way as in the dashboard. See the [privacy policy](/privacy-policy) and the [terms of service](/terms-of-service).

## Troubleshooting and support

- The assistant asks you to sign in again: approve the connection once more. Nothing in your account is lost.
- A tool says it needs a permission: reconnect and approve the permission it names.
- Exporting to Google Forms fails: connect your Google account in the Formswrite dashboard first.
- Publishing is refused on the Free plan: it allows a limited number of published forms each month.
