# Rubric Generator: Make a Rubric for Any Assignment

A rubric generator writes the criteria and level descriptors of a grading rubric from a short description of the assignment. Describe the task and grade level, and the free Formswrite AI rubric maker drafts a rubric you can edit, share with students, and grade essays with.

## Analytic, holistic or single-point: which rubric to make

Three common rubric types for the same assignment. Pick by how much feedback you want to give and how fast you need to grade.

**Analytic rubric.** One score per criterion (claim, evidence, organization, conventions) on the same scale. Students see exactly where they gained or lost points, and an AI grader can score each row separately. Best for essays, research papers and projects.

**Holistic rubric.** One overall score with a description of each level, such as 6 to 1. Faster to grade and close to how much timed writing is scored, but it gives less specific feedback.

**Single-point rubric.** Only the proficient level is described for each criterion, with room for notes on what fell short or went beyond. Short, easy for students to read, and made for drafts and feedback.

Rubric example: argumentative paragraph, 4 criteria

| Criterion | Points | What earns it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Claim | 0-3 | States one arguable claim that answers the question in the first or second sentence. |
| Evidence | 0-3 | Gives two specific, accurate pieces of evidence (a quotation, a statistic or an example) that support the claim. |
| Reasoning | 0-3 | Explains how each piece of evidence proves the claim, in the student’s own words. |
| Conventions | 0-3 | Errors in grammar and spelling are rare and never get in the way of meaning. |
| Total: 12 points (4 criteria, 0-3 each) | | |

## What is a rubric generator?

A rubric is a scoring guide that lists the criteria for an assignment and describes what work looks like at each level of quality. A rubric generator writes that guide for you. Instead of starting from a blank table, you tell the Formswrite rubric maker what students are producing, who they are, and how you want to score it, and the AI drafts the criteria and the descriptor for every cell.

The hard part of making a rubric by hand is not the table, it is writing descriptors that are specific enough to separate a 3 from a 4 without turning into a wall of text. The AI handles that first draft so you can spend your time on judgment: tightening the language, matching your standards, and deciding what matters most. Unlike a fixed rubric template, every rubric is written for the assignment you describe, whether that is a research paper with citations or an oral presentation on a historical figure.

## How to make a rubric in five steps

1. **Describe the assignment.** Type what students will hand in, for example "8th grade persuasive essay on school uniforms" or "group presentation on the water cycle". Paste the assignment instructions if you have them.
2. **Choose the rubric type and scale.** Pick analytic, holistic, single-point, or checklist, then choose how many performance levels you want (a 4-point scale is the most common) and the grade level.
3. **Set or confirm the criteria.** List the criteria you care about, such as claim, evidence, organization, and conventions, or let the AI suggest criteria that match the assignment type.
4. **Generate and edit.** The AI rubric maker writes a descriptor for every criterion at every level. Rewrite any cell, change point values, add weights, or remove a row before you use it.
5. **Share it before the assignment and grade with it after.** Copy or print the rubric, hand it out with the assignment so students know the target, then open it in the AI essay grader to score the essays against it.

## Which type of rubric should you make?

- **Analytic rubric:** a separate score for each criterion. Best for essays, projects, and lab reports where you want students to see exactly where they gained or lost points.
- **Holistic rubric:** one overall score with a description for each level. Faster to grade and useful for timed writing, quick performances, or large batches.
- **Single-point rubric:** describes only the proficient level for each criterion, with space on either side for notes on what fell short or went beyond. Great for feedback-heavy drafts.
- **Checklist rubric:** yes or no items. Ideal for younger students, lab safety, formatting requirements, and self-assessment.

### Example: 4-point analytic rubric for a persuasive essay

This is the kind of draft the AI rubric generator produces for “Grade 8 persuasive essay”. Every cell is editable.

| Criterion | 4 - Exceeds | 3 - Meets | 2 - Approaching | 1 - Beginning |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claim | Precise, arguable claim that frames the whole essay | Clear claim stated in the introduction | Claim is present but vague or too broad | No identifiable claim |
| Evidence | Relevant, well-chosen evidence from several credible sources | Relevant evidence supports most reasons | Some evidence, loosely connected to the claim | Little or no evidence |
| Organization | Logical order with smooth transitions and a strong conclusion | Clear introduction, body, and conclusion | Some structure, but ideas jump around | Hard to follow |
| Conventions | Virtually error-free | Minor errors that do not distract | Errors sometimes interfere with meaning | Frequent errors make it hard to read |

## Who uses this rubric maker

K-12 teachers use it to set expectations for essays, science fair projects, and presentations. University instructors and teaching assistants use it to keep grading consistent across sections. Instructional coaches use it to model clear success criteria, and homeschool parents use it to turn a vague assignment into something a child can check their own work against. Anyone who needs to make a rubric that other people can read and apply the same way will save time with it.

## Tips for a rubric students actually use

- Keep it to four to six criteria. More than that and nobody reads it.
- Describe what you can see in the work, not effort or attitude.
- Use parallel language across levels so the difference between a 3 and a 4 is obvious.
- Share the rubric when you assign the task, not when you return the grades.
- Grade with it: the [AI essay grader](/ai-essay-grader) scores each criterion of your rubric and quotes the evidence, and the [rubric grader](/rubric-grader) page explains how to bring any rubric.

## Rubric generator FAQ

What is a rubric generator?

A rubric generator is a tool that writes a grading rubric for you. You describe the assignment, choose the rubric type, grade level, and scoring scale, and the AI produces the criteria and a descriptor for each performance level. Formswrite lets you edit every cell before you print, export, or share it.

How do I make a rubric with AI?

Describe the assignment in a sentence or paste the instructions, choose analytic, holistic, single-point, or checklist, pick the number of performance levels, and generate. Review the criteria and descriptors, adjust wording and points, then share the rubric with students before they start the task.

Is the Formswrite rubric maker free?

Yes, it is a free rubric generator for teachers: sign up with no credit card and generate rubrics right away. Paid plans add higher volume across the AI tools and the exports used in the rest of Formswrite.

What types of rubrics can I make?

Analytic rubrics (a score for each criterion), holistic rubrics (one overall score), single-point rubrics (one proficient description per criterion with space for feedback), and checklist rubrics (yes or no items). You can also make task-specific rubrics for essays, lab reports, presentations, projects, and more.

Can I change the criteria, levels, and point values?

Yes. The generated rubric is fully editable. Add or remove criteria, rename performance levels, switch between a 4-point and 5-point scale, set custom point values or weights, and rewrite any descriptor so it matches your own expectations.

How many performance levels should a rubric have?

Most teachers use three to five levels. Four levels (for example Exceeds, Meets, Approaching, Beginning) is popular because there is no middle option to default to, which pushes you to make a clear judgment. Use fewer levels for quick formative checks and more for high-stakes summative work.

Can I grade student work with the rubric using AI?

Yes. Open the rubric in the Formswrite AI essay grader: it scores each criterion separately, quotes the sentences behind every score and drafts feedback, and nothing reaches students until you approve it. The first 30 essays each month are free.
