# Worksheet to Quiz: Turn a Worksheet Into a Self-Grading Quiz

In short

You can turn a worksheet into a self-grading quiz by sorting its items into three groups: items with one right answer (convert as is), open items you can rewrite as multiple choice, and items that need a human to read the response (keep as short answer). Upload the worksheet file to a converter, check each question, and export.

## Step 1: sort the worksheet items

Read down the worksheet and mark each item:

- **Convert as is:** multiple choice, true or false, matching, and fill in the blank with a single correct word or number.
- **Rewrite:** a question like "Explain why the leaf is green" has no single answer, but "Which pigment makes leaves green?" has one.
- **Keep for hand grading:** open response, diagrams to draw, and anything where you grade reasoning.

Count how many items land in each group. Fact-heavy worksheets mostly convert as is, while discussion-heavy ones need more rewriting.

## Step 2: 8 before and after examples

| Worksheet item | Quiz version | Answer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| "Fill in: The process of water turning to vapor is ______." | Multiple choice: A) condensation B) evaporation C) freezing D) melting | B) evaporation |
| "Solve: 3/5 + 1/5 = ____" | Short numeric answer, or multiple choice: A) 4/10 B) 4/5 C) 3/25 D) 2/5 | 4/5 |
| "True or false, and fix the false ones: Plants release oxygen at night." | True or false, plus a follow up: "Plants release oxygen during ____." | False (photosynthesis, daytime) |
| "Match the term to its definition: noun, verb, adjective." | Matching block with three pairs | noun is a person, place or thing and verb is an action |
| "List three causes of the Civil War." | Rewritten: "Which of these was a cause of the Civil War?" with one correct option | e.g. disagreement over slavery |
| "Label the parts of a cell." | Replace with: "Which part controls the cell's activities?" A) nucleus B) membrane C) vacuole D) wall | A) nucleus |
| "Write a sentence with the word reluctant." | Keep as a short answer item, graded with a rubric | Sample: She was reluctant to speak first. |
| "Round 4,638 to the nearest hundred." | Short numeric answer | 4,600 |

The pattern is the same everywhere: replace "list" and "explain" prompts with a version that has one best answer, and keep one or two open items that matter.

## Step 3: convert the file

1. Save the worksheet as a Word file, PDF, Google Doc or Excel sheet. Typed text converts best. A scan of a handwritten page does not.
2. Put the answer key at the end of the same file, or mark the correct answers in the document, so the converter has them.
3. Upload it with the [quiz generator](/tools/quiz-generator), or use the [PDF to quiz](/tools/pdf-to-quiz) page for a PDF.
4. Review every question. Check that images and special characters carried over, that one option is marked correct, and that rewritten items still match what you taught.
5. Export. The free plan allows 5 Formswrite Forms per month and the only free export is a Formswrite Form. Google Forms, LMS formats, Kahoot, Quizizz, Blooket and Gimkit exports are paid.

If you want a Google Form specifically, the step-by-step is in our guide to [turning a Google Doc into a quiz](/blog/google-doc-quiz-template) and, for a PDF source, [PDF to quiz generator](/blog/pdf-to-quiz-generator).

## When a worksheet should stay a worksheet

A quiz is the wrong tool for practice that needs working shown, such as long division or a proof. Auto-grading checks the final answer, so use the quiz for the check at the end and keep the worksheet for the process. If you only need a fresh printable, the [AI worksheet generator](/blog/ai-worksheet-generator) makes one from a topic.

## Add an answer key and feedback

Self-grading is most useful when students learn from a wrong answer. Add a one-sentence explanation to the items students miss most, such as why evaporation, not condensation, turns water to vapor. The guide to [making an answer key in Google Forms](/blog/how-to-make-an-answer-key-in-google-forms) covers points and feedback for the Google Forms route.

## FAQ

Can a worksheet with images convert to a quiz?

Text questions convert reliably. Images that are part of a question, like a diagram or a graph, may need to be re-attached after conversion. Check each image question in the preview before you share the quiz.

What if my worksheet has no answer key?

Add one before you convert, even a quick one at the bottom of the file. A converter can sometimes propose answers, but you should always verify them, since a wrong key marks correct students as wrong.

Do students need a Google account to take the quiz?

That depends on where the quiz lives. A quiz exported to Google Forms follows that form's own sign-in settings, so check them before you share the link. Check the sharing options of a Formswrite-hosted quiz in the preview as well.

Can I run the converted worksheet as a class game?

Yes. A converted quiz can run as a live timed game with Formswrite Play, or be exported to Kahoot, Quizizz, Blooket or Gimkit on a paid plan.
