Where Are Google Forms Saved? Complete Guide

Where Are Google Forms Saved? Complete Guide

Google Forms are automatically saved in Google Drive, linked to the Google account you used when you created the form. Every form you build at forms.google.com appears in your Drive root by default, and Google autosaves every edit in real time so you never lose work. Updated June 2026.
This guide shows you exactly where to find your forms, where responses go, how to organize everything, and answers the most common questions about Google Forms storage.

Where Google Forms are saved

When you create a Google Form, Google stores it as a file in your Google Drive. It is not saved to your device - it lives in the cloud under your Google account. You can reach it two ways:
  • forms.google.com - shows only your forms, in one place, sorted by last modified
  • drive.google.com - shows all Drive files including forms; search or filter by type "Forms"
If you signed in with a work or school Google Workspace account, the form is saved in that account's Drive, not your personal one. This is the most common reason people cannot find a form they created.

Where Google Forms responses are saved

Response data is stored separately from the form itself. By default, responses stay inside the form and are visible under the Responses tab. You can also link the form to a Google Sheet:
  1. Open the form in edit mode.
  2. Click the Responses tab at the top.
  3. Click the green Sheets icon (or "Link to Sheets").
  4. Choose to create a new spreadsheet or link to an existing one.
Once linked, every new response appears as a new row in the Sheet automatically. The Sheet is saved in your Google Drive alongside the form.

Step 1: Open Google Forms to find your saved forms

Go to forms.google.com in any browser. Sign in if prompted. The homepage shows all forms saved to that account under "Recent forms." Scroll down or use the search bar at the top to find older forms.

Step 2: Check Google Drive if you cannot find the form

Open drive.google.com. In the search bar, type the form name or use the filter dropdown and choose Type > Forms. Google Forms files show a purple icon to distinguish them from Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
If you created the form inside a shared folder, it may not appear in "My Drive" root. Click Shared with me in the left sidebar to check there too.

Step 3: Check the correct Google account

Click your profile picture in the top-right corner of drive.google.com. If you have multiple accounts, switch between them. Forms saved under a work or school account will not appear when you are logged into your personal account.

Step 4: Restore a deleted form

If you accidentally deleted a form, open Google Drive and click Trash in the left sidebar. Deleted forms stay in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. Right-click the form and choose Restore to move it back to Drive.

How to organize your Google Forms in Drive

  • Create a folder: In Google Drive, click New > Folder. Name it something like "Forms 2026." Then drag forms into it.
  • Move from Forms homepage: On forms.google.com, right-click any form, choose "Move to," and pick your folder.
  • Star important forms: Right-click a form and click "Add to Starred" so it appears in the Starred section of Drive for quick access.
  • Rename forms: Click the three-dot menu on any form card and choose Rename.

FAQ: where are Google Forms saved

Where are Google Forms saved?
Google Forms are saved automatically in Google Drive, in the Google account you used to create them. You can find them at forms.google.com (forms only) or at drive.google.com (all files, filter by type Forms). Every change you make is saved in real time - there is no manual save button.
Where are Google Forms responses saved?
Responses are saved inside the form by default and visible under the Responses tab. You can also link the form to a Google Sheet by clicking the Sheets icon in the Responses tab. Once linked, every new response is automatically added as a new row in that Sheet, which is also saved in your Google Drive.
Why can I not find my Google Form?
The most common reason is that the form was created under a different Google account (for example, a school or work account). Click your profile picture in Drive and switch accounts. Also check the Trash folder in Google Drive in case the form was accidentally deleted.
Are Google Forms saved automatically?
Yes. Google Forms saves every change automatically as you type. You will see a brief "Saving..." message at the top of the editor, followed by "All changes saved in Drive" when the save is complete. You do not need to press any save button.
Can I access Google Forms on mobile?
Yes. Open a browser on your phone and go to forms.google.com, or open the Google Drive app and filter by Forms. You can view, edit, and share forms from any device as long as you are signed into your Google account.
Can I move a Google Form to a different Google Drive account?
Google Forms cannot be directly transferred between accounts, but you can share the form with the new account, open it there, and choose File > Make a copy. The copy is saved to the new account's Drive. Note that responses do not transfer with a copy.
Are Google Forms private by default?
Yes. A form is private to its owner by default. Only people you explicitly share edit access with can open it in edit mode. The response link you send to participants only lets them submit answers - they cannot see the form design or other responses.
How do I find old Google Forms I created years ago?
Go to forms.google.com and scroll down - forms are listed in reverse chronological order. Alternatively, open Google Drive, type the form name in the search bar, or use the filter to show all Forms files across your Drive, including any that are in subfolders.
Can I convert a document into a Google Form instead of building one from scratch?
Yes. Formswrite converts Google Docs, Word files, PDFs, and other documents into a Google Form in one click. The resulting form is saved to your Google Drive just like any form you build by hand. Visit the Formswrite document-to-form converter at formswrite.com to try it free.
