# Test Maker for Teachers: Printable and Online Tests

In short

The best way to make a test is to write the questions once and use them twice: printed for the room, and online for absent students. For a Filipino teacher preparing a periodical test, Formswrite drafts the questions with an answer key, and one document feeds both versions.

## Test or quiz: why the difference matters

A quiz is short and low stakes. A test, such as a periodical test or a unit summative test, covers more content, carries more marks and usually needs a stricter setup. That changes what you need from a tool:

- A clear answer key you can check line by line.
- Control over how many questions come from each lesson.
- A printable version, because many classrooms still sit tests on paper.
- An online version for make-up sittings, which you do not have to grade by hand.

If you only need a short quiz, our guide to a [free online quiz maker for teachers](/blog/free-online-quiz-maker-for-teachers-a-step-by-step-guide) is the better fit. This page is about the longer, graded test.

## Step 1: Plan the coverage

Before you generate anything, list the lessons the test covers and decide how many items each gets. Many schools in the Philippines follow the grading period (quarter) and the learning competencies set in the DepEd curriculum guide, so match your items to the competencies you actually taught in that period. A short table keeps you honest.

| Lesson or competency | Items | Level |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Lesson 1 | 10 | Remembering and understanding |
| Lesson 2 | 10 | Understanding and applying |
| Lesson 3 | 10 | Applying and analysing |
| Lesson 4 | 10 | Mixed, with 2 higher-order items |

Forty items across four lessons is an example only. Use the number your school asks for.

## Step 2: Generate the questions

1. Open the [multiple choice test generator](/tools/multiple-choice-test-generator).
2. Upload the lesson as a PDF, Word file or Google Doc, or paste your own notes. A learning module or activity sheet works if it has readable text.
3. Choose multiple choice and set the difficulty. Ask for the number of items from your plan, plus a few extra.
4. Read each question and its marked answer. Delete the weak ones, reword the unclear ones, and keep only what matches what you taught.
5. Repeat for each lesson, then put the items in the order you want.

You still own the test, so check the answer key before anything is printed.

## Step 3: Make the printed version

Put the questions in a Word or Google Docs file with your school's header, name and section lines, directions and time allowance.

## Step 4: Make the online version

For absent students or a quick make-up, turn the same document into a Google Form quiz that grades itself.

1. Upload your Word file to the [Word to Google Form converter](/convert/word-to-google-form), or your PDF to the [PDF to Google Form converter](/convert/pdf-to-google-form).
2. Check the preview, confirm the answers and set the points.
3. Export to Google Forms and share the link.

Exporting to Google Forms is a paid feature. Because both versions come from one file, you correct a mistake in one place. The online route is covered in more detail in [making an exam in Google Forms](/blog/how-to-make-an-exam-in-google-forms).

## FAQ

Can I use a learning module PDF to make a test?

Yes, if the PDF has readable text. Upload it, generate questions for the lessons you taught and review them. Only use material you have the right to use.

Does the test maker give an answer key?

Yes. Each generated multiple choice question comes with the correct option marked. Check it against your lesson before printing.

Can I print the test and also give it online?

Yes. Build the questions once in a document, print from that file, and convert the same file to a Google Form for the online version.

Is it free for teachers?

You can start free. The free plan allows 5 Formswrite Forms per month, and the only free export is Formswrite Forms. Google Forms, PDF and Word exports are paid.
