# Research Essay Rubric: Template for Grading Papers

In short

A research essay rubric should score seven things: the thesis, the quality of sources, the use of evidence, analysis, organization, citations and writing conventions.

## Research essay rubric template

Points shown are for the top level. The Meets, Approaching and Beginning levels are worth 80, 60 and 40 percent of that value.

| Criterion (points) | Exceeds | Meets | Approaching | Beginning |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Thesis and focus (15) | A precise, arguable thesis that guides the whole paper | A clear thesis and the paper stays on topic | The thesis is broad, or the paper drifts | No identifiable thesis |
| Sources (15) | Five or more credible, varied sources chosen with care | Enough credible sources that fit the topic | Few sources, or some are weak for the task | Sources are missing or unreliable |
| Use of evidence (15) | Evidence is specific, accurate and integrated smoothly | Evidence is accurate and relevant | Evidence is general or dropped in without context | Little or no evidence |
| Analysis (20) | Explains what the evidence means and connects sources to each other | Explains the evidence in relation to the thesis | Mostly summarizes sources | No analysis |
| Organization (15) | Logical sections, clear transitions, strong introduction and conclusion | Clear order with minor lapses | Order is uneven and transitions are weak | Hard to follow |
| Citations (10) | Every source cited in text and in the reference list, in the required style | A few small formatting errors | Several missing or incorrect citations | Citations are missing |
| Conventions (10) | Clear, correct, appropriately formal writing | A few errors that do not hinder reading | Errors often distract | Errors block meaning |

Points per level: Thesis 15, 12, 9, 6. Sources 15, 12, 9, 6. Evidence 15, 12, 9, 6. Analysis 20, 16, 12, 8. Organization 15, 12, 9, 6. Citations 10, 8, 6, 4. Conventions 10, 8, 6, 4. The top-level total is 100. Adjust the source count in the Exceeds cell to match your assignment instructions.

## Why analysis carries the most points

Research papers often turn into collections of quotes. Giving analysis the biggest share signals that the thinking, not the number of sources, is what you are grading. If your course focuses on research skills, such as finding and evaluating sources, move five points from analysis to sources.

## How to score the tricky criteria

### Sources

Check that sources are credible and fit the question, not only that there are enough of them. A useful rule is to ask whether each source adds something the others do not. Five articles that say the same thing earn less than three that cover different angles.

### Analysis versus summary

Pick a paragraph and ask what the writer did with the evidence. If the paragraph describes what a source says and moves on, that is summary. If it says what the evidence means, how it compares with another source, or what it implies for the thesis, that is analysis.

### Citations

Do not recheck every entry. Spot-check three citations: one in the text, one in the reference list and one quotation that should have a page number. If all three are right, the paper usually meets the standard.

## Steps for grading a stack of papers

1. **Read the first three papers and do not score.** Decide what an Exceeds and an Approaching paper look like for each row.
2. **Read each paper once for the big picture,** thesis, structure and analysis, and score those rows first.
3. **Do a second, faster pass** for sources and citations, which you can check from the reference list.
4. **Write two comments:** one strength and one priority for the next paper.
5. **Total the points and compare** the highest and lowest papers side by side. If they are not clearly different, revisit your scores.

## Variations for different assignments

- **Annotated bibliography:** use only sources, evidence and citations, and add "Evaluation of each source".
- **Short research essay of two or three pages:** drop the source count to two or three and cut organization to 10 points.
- **Group research project:** add an individual row for each student's contribution.

You can build a version for your own prompt with the [research paper rubric generator](/tools/rubric-generator/research-paper), which generates a rubric with AI that you can edit. If you are weighing a different format, read how [holistic and analytic rubrics differ](/blog/holistic-vs-analytic-rubric). When the stack is large, an AI grader can grade against a rubric you supply. The Formswrite [AI essay grader](/ai-essay-grader) does that, and you should review the output, especially for source quality and citation accuracy, which a model cannot verify against the real sources. Our [comparison of AI grading tools](/blog/ai-grading-tools-for-teachers) covers what to check first, and the [rubric grader](/rubric-grader) explains how to turn a rubric like this one into graded essays. For the oral component, pair this with a [presentation rubric](/blog/presentation-rubric-oral-presentation). AP Seminar teachers will find the official research argument rows explained in the [AP Seminar IWA rubric](/rubrics/ap-seminar-iwa-rubric) guide.

## FAQ

What are the main criteria in a research essay rubric?

The usual ones are thesis, sources, use of evidence, analysis, organization, citations and writing conventions. Some courses add originality or a reflection on the research process. Keep the list to seven or eight rows so it stays usable.

How should I weight a research paper rubric?

Weight what you taught most. In most research writing courses, analysis and thesis carry the largest share, with sources and evidence next, and citations and conventions smaller. The template above gives analysis 20 of 100 points.

How many sources should a research essay have?

It depends on the length and level. A short high school paper might need three to five, and a longer college paper eight or more. State the number and the types of sources allowed in the assignment, then use the Sources row to score it.

How do I grade citations without checking every one?

Spot-check a sample: one in-text citation, one reference list entry and one quotation. If all are correct, the paper is probably at the Meets level or above. If any are wrong, check a few more before deciding on the score.
