# Mock Test Maker for Tutors and Coaching Classes

In short

A mock test maker lets a tutor turn a set of questions into an online test that students take on their phones and that grades itself.

## What a tutor needs from a mock test

Most tutors do not need a full examination platform. They need five things:

1. A fast way to get a question set into an online form, since typing 60 questions again is the real cost.
2. A correct answer and a mark value for each question.
3. Automatic scoring, so results are ready when the sitting ends.
4. A way to limit when students can take it.
5. A results view that shows which questions most students got wrong.

Google Forms covers items two to five at no cost, and Formswrite covers the first one.

## Step 1: Get your questions into a document

Start from whatever you already have. Common sources are a Word file of questions you typed over the years, a PDF of a chapter test, or a spreadsheet. If you only have chapter notes, the [AI quiz generator](/tools/quiz-generator) writes multiple choice, true or false and short answer questions from a PDF, a Word file or a topic, with the answer marked. Read every question before you keep it, because you are the one answering for the test.

Format each question the same way: a number, the question, four options labelled A to D, and the answer on a separate line. A consistent format converts best.

## Step 2: Convert the document to a quiz

Upload the file to the [Word to Google Form converter](/convert/word-to-google-form) or the [PDF to Google Form converter](/convert/pdf-to-google-form). Formswrite builds a form from the questions it finds. Then:

1. Check the preview and fix any question the reader mis-split.
2. Confirm the correct answer on each question.
3. Set the marks per question.
4. Export to Google Forms, which is a paid feature. On the free plan you can keep the test as a Formswrite Form.

## Step 3: Set the test conditions

A mock test is only useful if it feels like a test. In Google Forms you can:

- Turn on "Make this a quiz" and release marks right after submission or after you review.
- Shuffle the order of questions, so neighbouring students do not see the same sequence.
- Collect email addresses so every attempt is tied to a student.
- Limit to one response per student, which needs a sign-in.

The simplest control is the response window: share the link a minute before the sitting starts and switch off "Accepting responses" when time is up. If you need a real countdown for each student, use a learning platform with a quiz time limit. Formswrite exports to Moodle on a paid plan.

Google Forms also does not apply negative marking on its own. If your test uses it, count right and wrong answers from the responses sheet and apply the rule with a formula.

## Step 4: Run the sitting and read the results

Send the link in your class group. After the window closes, open the Responses tab. The summary shows the questions with the lowest share of correct answers. Those are what you teach next. Open the linked Google Sheet to rank students or calculate a rank list.

## A simple test series plan

A tutor with a weekly class can run a series without extra effort:

| Week | Content | Format |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Chapter test, 20 questions | Online, 20 minutes |
| 2 | Chapter test, 20 questions | Online, 20 minutes |
| 3 | Two chapters mixed, 30 questions | Online, 40 minutes |
| 4 | Full portion, 60 questions | Online, 90 minutes |

Reuse questions that most students got wrong in week one inside the week four paper.

## FAQ

Can I make a mock test from a PDF of questions?

Yes. Upload it to the PDF to Google Form converter, review the preview and set the answers. Make sure you have the right to use the questions.

Does the test grade itself?

Yes, once the correct answers and marks are set and quiz mode is on, multiple choice questions are scored automatically. Short answers that need judgement are better reviewed by you.

Can students take the test on their phones?

Yes. A Google Form works in a mobile browser with no app, though students need a Google account if you require sign-in or limit to one response.

Is there a countdown timer?

Not in Google Forms itself. Control the sitting by opening and closing the response window, or run the test on a learning platform with a quiz time limit.
