# Make a Kahoot From a Google Form: 2 Working Methods

In short

Kahoot has no button that reads a Google Form directly. You can get there in two ways: collect questions in a form shaped like Kahoot's spreadsheet template and import the response sheet, or convert a finished Google Form quiz into a Kahoot-ready file with a converter. The first works when you want people to submit questions.

## Method 1: Use the form as a question collector

Kahoot published this method on its blog on November 13, 2018, and the importer it relies on still exists. The idea is to build a Google Form whose questions line up with Kahoot's spreadsheet template, so that the responses paste straight in.

1. Download Kahoot's official spreadsheet template and note its columns.
2. Build a Google Form that asks for the same fields: question, answers, correct answer number and time limit.
3. Share the form with students or colleagues and say the topic and how many questions you want.
4. Open the responses in a Google Sheet, check each row, then download it as an .xlsx file.
5. In the Kahoot creator choose Add, Import, then Import spreadsheet, and upload the file.

The rules of the template still apply: questions up to 120 characters, answers up to 75, time limits of 5, 10, 20, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, and standard quiz questions only. The full list is in our [Kahoot spreadsheet template guide](/blog/kahoot-spreadsheet-template). This method is good for co-creation, such as a class building a review game together, but it needs careful cleanup because students will not follow the format perfectly.

## Prepare the form first

Whichever method you pick, a form that is clean on the Google side converts cleaner. Turn on Make this a quiz in the form settings, give every multiple choice question one marked correct answer, keep option text short, and remove sections that only hold instructions. Questions with an image are better rebuilt in Kahoot afterwards.

## Method 2: Convert a finished Google Form quiz

If you already have a Google Form quiz with correct answers set, retyping it into a spreadsheet is wasted work. Formswrite can import an existing Google Form and convert it to other platforms, Kahoot included. The usual flow:

1. Open Formswrite and import your Google Form.
2. Review the detected questions and the marked correct answers.
3. Choose Kahoot as the export target.
4. Import the result in the Kahoot creator.
5. Add images and music, and check the timers.

Exporting to Kahoot is a paid feature. The free plan only exports Formswrite Forms.

## What does not survive the trip

Kahoot's importer takes standard quiz questions only, so some Google Forms content needs a decision:

| Google Forms item | In Kahoot |
| --- | --- |
| Multiple choice with one correct answer | Standard quiz question |
| Checkboxes with several correct answers | Standard quiz question with more than one right answer |
| Short answer, paragraph | Not imported by the spreadsheet tool |
| Grid questions, file upload | Not suitable, rebuild by hand |
| Images in questions | Re-add in the Kahoot creator |
| Long answer options | Shorten to 75 characters |

## Which method should you choose

Choose Method 1 when the goal is collaboration and you do not mind cleaning data. Choose Method 2 when the quiz is done and you want it in Kahoot with the answer key intact. If your destination is a different platform, the same idea applies: see [convert Google Form to Quizizz](/blog/convert-google-form-to-quizizz) for Wayground, and [how to turn your Google Docs into a Kahoot quiz](/blog/how-to-turn-your-google-docs-into-a-kahoot-quiz) if your questions live in a document rather than a form. The [Kahoot generator](/tools/kahoot-generator) can also build a game from a PDF or Word file.

## A worked example

A teacher builds a ten question Google Form quiz on fractions with the answer key set. For a live review on Friday she imports the form into Formswrite, checks that all ten correct answers were detected, exports for Kahoot and uploads it. The long answer on question seven is over 75 characters, so she shortens it in Kahoot's creator. The whole job takes a few minutes instead of retyping ten questions into a spreadsheet.

## FAQ

Can Kahoot import a Google Form link?

No. Kahoot's importer reads an .xlsx spreadsheet that follows its template. You either collect answers in a matching form and export the response sheet, or convert the form with another tool first.

Will correct answers carry over from a Google Form quiz?

With the spreadsheet method you must enter the correct answer number yourself. With a converter that reads the form, the marked correct answers are detected and you review them before export.

Can I turn Google Forms short answer questions into a Kahoot?

Not through the spreadsheet importer, which accepts standard quiz questions only. Rewrite short answer items as multiple choice, or add them in the Kahoot creator by hand.
