Below are the rules from Kahoot's help center, checked on October 8, 2026, and the errors that make the importer drop rows. ## The rules of the Kahoot template Kahoot says you must use its own template. Download it from the help article "How to import questions from a spreadsheet to your kahoot", open it in Excel, LibreOffice, Google Sheets or Numbers, and type into the designated columns. The rules that matter: | Field | Rule from Kahoot | | --- | --- | | Question | Stated limit of 120 characters | | Answer options | Stated limit of 75 characters each, every question needs at least two answers | | Time limit (sec) | Only 5, 10, 20, 30, 60 or 120 | | Correct answer(s) | The answer number, such as 1, or several separated by commas, such as 2,3 | | File type | Save as .xlsx (Excel 2007 or newer) | | Question types | Standard quiz questions only | | Images | Not importable through the spreadsheet | A True or False question therefore has to be written as a normal two-answer quiz question. Math symbols and special characters cannot come through the spreadsheet either, so paste them into the creator afterwards, directly or as LaTeX. ## How to import the filled template 1. Open the Kahoot creator by clicking Create in the top right corner. 2. Click Add in the left panel. 3. Choose Import from the menu. 4. At the bottom of the prompt, select Import spreadsheet. 5. Drag your .xlsx file into the prompt, or click Select File, then click Upload. Kahoot checks the file automatically. If it finds problems you can go back and fix the spreadsheet, or continue and drop only the problematic questions. When the import succeeds the questions appear in the creator straight away, where you add images, music and anything else the template could not carry. ## Common import errors and fixes - **Timer rejected.** A value like 15 or 45 is not in the allowed list. Use one that is. - **Text too long.** A pasted paragraph usually breaks the question limit, and science and history options often break the answer limit. Shorten them, or move context into a slide before the question. - **Missing correct answer.** The cell must hold a number that points at an answer column, not the answer text. - **Only one answer.** Every question needs at least two options. - **Wrong file type.** A .csv or .xls file will not do. Use Save As and pick .xlsx. ## Need a spreadsheet of an existing kahoot? Kahoot does not offer a plain download button for a finished kahoot. Its help center says that if you only want to merge kahoots, use the built-in combine feature. If you need the questions in a spreadsheet for another reason, play the kahoot through and download the spreadsheet report afterwards, which includes an .xlsx file with all questions and answer options. ## Skip the typing: fill the template from a document Most teachers do not start in a spreadsheet. They start with a worksheet, a Word test or a PDF from a publisher. Retyping those into 120 character cells is the slow part. Row one holds the question "Which gas do plants take in during photosynthesis?" Answer 1 is "Oxygen", answer 2 is "Carbon dioxide", answer 3 is "Nitrogen", answer 4 is "Hydrogen". The time limit is 20. The correct answer cell holds 2. If two answers were right, say in a "Which of these are plant cell parts?" question, the cell would hold 1,3 for the first and third options. No. Kahoot's help center says only standard quiz questions can be imported through the spreadsheet, and images cannot be imported this way. Add images and other question types in the creator after the import. What file format does the Kahoot importer accept? The template must be saved as an .xlsx file, which means Excel 2007 or newer. You can edit it in Excel, LibreOffice, Google Sheets or Numbers, but you must download or export it as .xlsx before uploading. What happens if my spreadsheet has errors? Kahoot checks the file for formatting errors during import. You can fix the spreadsheet and upload it again, or continue and let Kahoot skip the problematic questions. Is there a character limit for Kahoot questions and answers? The template states 120 characters for a question and 75 characters for an answer. Long text needs to be shortened before the import will accept it.
