## Scoring and structure

| Section | Questions | Points each | Time |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Identify the part of speech | 8 | 1 | 6 min |
| Choose the correct word | 4 | 1 | 3 min |
| Apply it | 3 | 2 | 6 min |

## Tips for writing grammar questions

- Underline or bold the word you are asking about only when the stem would otherwise be ambiguous.
- Use short, familiar sentences so the quiz tests grammar and not reading level.
- Avoid words that serve two roles unless that is the point, such as _light_ (noun, verb, adjective). Add them deliberately in a later challenge section.
- Give one question per rule. A question that tests both agreement and tense tells you less when it is wrong.

## Turn the template into a self-grading quiz

1. Copy the questions into a document with the answers marked.
2. Open the [grammar quiz generator](/tools/quiz-generator/grammar) and paste or upload the file, or describe the topic, grade and number of questions to have a set drafted.
3. Check each sentence in the preview. Grammar items are the ones most affected by a small drafting error, such as a sentence with two correct answers.
4. Export. The free plan includes 5 Formswrite Forms per month, and the only free export is a Formswrite Form. Google Forms and the other formats are paid.
5. Keep items 13 to 15 for hand grading, or make them fill in the blank. See [fill in the blank questions](/blog/fill-in-the-blank-questions) for formats that grade themselves.

## FAQ

How many parts of speech are there?

Traditional grammar lists eight: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Some curricula add articles or determiners as a ninth. Check which list your curriculum uses before writing questions.

What grade learns parts of speech?

Students meet nouns and verbs in the early elementary grades and learn the full set of eight by upper elementary or early middle school. Pacing differs by state and by curriculum.

How do I avoid ambiguous grammar questions?

Read each stem and ask whether a different option could also be correct in some reading. Words like light, run and fast can fill several roles, so use them only when the sentence makes the role clear.

Can I make a grammar quiz from a worksheet?

Yes. Upload the worksheet file with its answer key, and convert the items that have one correct answer. See our guide on turning a [worksheet into a quiz](/blog/worksheet-to-quiz-self-grading) for the rewrite steps.
