# Google Forms Quiz Mode: What It Does and How to Turn It On

In short

Google Forms quiz mode is a single switch: open your form, click Settings, and turn on Make this a quiz. Once it is on, every supported question gets an Answer key button, points and feedback, and Google Forms scores each submission for you.

Steps follow Google's help page for creating and grading quizzes, as checked in October 2026.

## How to turn on quiz mode

1. Go to forms.google.com and open the form, or create a blank one.
2. Click **Settings** at the top of the form.
3. Find the **Quizzes** section and switch on **Make this a quiz**.
4. Choose when students see their grade: **Immediately after each submission** or **Later, after manual review**.
5. Under **Respondent can see**, tick what you want to reveal: missed questions, correct answers and point values.
6. Return to the **Questions** tab and add an answer key to each question.

Google also publishes a shortcut, g.co/createaquiz, which opens a new form for you.

## What quiz mode adds

| Feature | Where you find it |
| --- | --- |
| Answer key on each question | Bottom left of the question card |
| Points per question | Top right while the answer key is open |
| Feedback for right or wrong answers | Add answer feedback in the answer key view |
| Scores per response | Responses tab, Individual and Question views |
| Choice of when grades go out | Settings, Quizzes |
| Summary of average and range | Responses tab |

An answer key works on multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, short answer and both grid types. Paragraph, date, time, file upload and linear scale questions are not graded automatically. Give them a point value you assign by hand from the Responses tab.

## Immediate or manual release

Immediate release suits low-stakes practice. Choose manual release when some questions need your review, such as paragraph answers, so students do not see a score that is still missing points. To email the scores afterwards, the form needs to know who each respondent is, so collect email addresses under the responses settings. Our walkthrough on [how to release scores in Google Forms](/blog/how-to-release-scores-in-google-forms) covers the sending step.

## What quiz mode does not do

These are common surprises:

- **No timer.** Quiz mode has no time limit. People use scripts or add-ons for that, see [adding a timer to a Google Forms quiz](/blog/how-to-add-timer-in-google-forms-quiz).
- **No question bank.** All students see the same questions. You can shuffle their order, see [shuffling questions in Google Forms](/blog/google-forms-shuffle-questions).
- **No partial credit on multiple choice.** A choice is right or wrong.
- **No grading of open paragraph answers.** Those need your eyes, or an AI grader.
- **Settings sit in the form, not in the quiz switch.** Limits such as one response per person live in the general settings. The [Google Forms settings guide](/blog/google-forms-settings-guide) lists them all.

## The slow part is the questions

Typing 40 questions with options and answer keys takes far longer than the switch. If your questions already exist in a document, convert them instead of retyping.

Formswrite turns a Google Doc, Word file, PDF, Excel sheet or Google Sheet into a Google Form quiz. The [Google Form quiz generator](/tools/google-form-quiz-generator) builds the quiz from your file or from a topic, and the [answer key tool for Google Forms](/tools/answer-key-for-google-form) helps when the questions are in place and the key is missing. Free accounts get five Formswrite Forms per month, and exporting to Google Forms is a paid feature.

After the import, open the form, check Settings, and confirm the quiz switch and release options are what you want before you share the link.

## Test it before sharing

Open the preview (eye icon), answer the form yourself, submit, and read your score on the Responses tab. A 20 question quiz at one point each should total 20. Then decide on access limits such as sign-in and one response per person.

## FAQ

Can I turn quiz mode on for a form that already has responses?

Yes, the switch is available on any form. Add answer keys afterwards, then check the Responses tab to see how existing submissions are scored. Test on a copy first if the form holds real data.

Does quiz mode work on the phone app?

You can fill in a quiz on any device, but building one is much easier on a computer at forms.google.com, where the Settings panel and answer keys are laid out clearly.

Do students need a Google account to take a quiz?

Not by default. Anyone with the link can answer unless you restrict the form to signed-in users. If you plan to email scores, collect email addresses so you know who is who.

Can I switch quiz mode off again?

Yes, the same Make this a quiz switch in Settings turns it off. Duplicate the form first if it holds answer keys you would hate to lose.
