# Google Forms Alternative for Quizzes: What to Use

In short

You do not need an alternative to Google Forms for grading, since it supports answer keys on six question types, points and feedback. You need one for live play: Wayground and Socrative offer live modes, and Formswrite Play runs a converted quiz as a timed game. This guide is about quizzes only, with facts checked in October 2026.

## What Google Forms quizzes already do

Google's [quiz help page](https://support.google.com/docs/answer/7032287) says you can create answer keys for short answer, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, multiple choice grid and checkbox grid questions. You can assign points and feedback on all question types, release scores immediately or after manual review, and see summaries of frequently missed questions with score distributions. You can award full, partial or no points per answer.

What it does not list is a live room, leaderboard or game mode, which is where the alternatives below come in.

## Pick Google Forms if

You need graded work that students complete on their own time and results in a Google Sheet. Our guide to [limiting responses in Google Forms](/blog/google-forms-limit-responses) covers the common control teachers ask about, and [Google Forms versus Microsoft Forms](/blog/is-google-forms-free-vs-microsoft-forms) covers the other big form tool.

## Pick Wayground if

You want the class to compete in real time. Basic is free, with live and student-paced delivery, though free question types are limited. See our [Quizizz alternative post](/blog/quizizz-alternative-free).

## Pick Socrative if

You want quick room-code checks with instant feedback and automatic grading. The free plan has 5 quizzes and 1 room. More in the [Socrative alternative guide](/blog/socrative-alternative-for-quizzes).

## Pick Formswrite if

You write tests in Word or Google Docs. Formswrite converts the file into a Google Form quiz in one click, generates quizzes with AI, and exports to Kahoot, Quizizz, Socrative, Canvas, Moodle and more. Formswrite Play runs a converted quiz as a live timed game, so one question document serves both homework and a live review. AI grading covers essays and Google Form quizzes. The free plan allows 5 Formswrite Forms per month, and Google Forms and other exports are paid.

## How to move your questions without retyping

1. Put your questions in a Word file, PDF, Google Doc, Excel file or Google Sheet, with the correct answer marked.
2. Upload the file to Formswrite and choose the quiz output.
3. Check the generated questions and answer key, and fix anything the conversion misread.
4. Export to the platform you use, or run it as a live timed game with Formswrite Play.

Remember that the free plan covers 5 Formswrite Forms per month, and exports to other platforms are paid.

## A quick way to decide

Ask what the quiz is for. If it is graded and takes place over days, Google Forms already covers answer keys, points, feedback and score release, so an alternative adds little. If it is a live review where energy matters, pick a tool with a live mode: Wayground's free plan has live and student-paced play, Socrative has Space Race, and Formswrite Play runs a converted quiz as a timed game. If the problem is the effort of building quizzes, the answer is not another quiz tool but a faster way in, such as converting a Word file or Google Doc you already have. Most teachers end up using Google Forms for assessment and one game tool for review.

## FAQ

Is there something better than Google Forms for quizzes?

For live classroom play, yes: Wayground and Socrative offer live modes that Google Forms does not list. For graded take-home quizzes, Google Forms is hard to beat on cost and Sheets integration.

Which question types can Google Forms grade?

According to Google, you can set answer keys for short answer, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, multiple choice grid and checkbox grid questions.

Can I turn a Google Form quiz into a live game?

Not inside Google Forms. You can convert the questions with Formswrite and run them as a timed Formswrite Play game, or export them to a platform such as Kahoot or Quizizz.

Is Quizizz a Google Forms alternative?

Quizizz is now called Wayground. Its free Basic plan offers live and student-paced quizzes, which makes it a common alternative when you want gameplay on top of grading.
