# Google Doc to Google Form Not Working: 6 Fixes

In short

When a Google Doc converts to an empty form, a form with the wrong answers, or a form that is missing half its options, the cause is nearly always the layout of the Doc, not the converter. A converter reads patterns: a numbered question, lettered choices, a marked answer. If the Doc breaks the pattern, the converter cannot guess.

## Find your symptom

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Empty form, zero questions | Link is not shared, or the questions are in images | Fix 1 |
| Questions found, no options | Options are not on separate lettered lines | Fix 2 |
| Wrong or no correct answers | No recognised answer marker | Fix 3 |
| Questions in a strange order | Tables or columns used for layout | Fix 4 |
| Images missing | Pictures are not read as text | Fix 5 |
| Question type is wrong | No cue for checkbox or short answer | Fix 6 |

## Fix 1: empty form

Two causes account for most empty results. First, the sharing setting: if the converter works from a link, the Doc must be viewable by anyone with the link, or shared with the account you used. Open the link in a private browser window to test it. Second, the questions might be pictures, such as a pasted screenshot of a test. A converter reads text, so retype or run OCR on the image first.

## Fix 2: options missing

Put every option on its own line and start it with a letter and a bracket or full stop: "a)", "b)", "A.", "B.". Options joined on one line, separated by commas or tabs, are read as part of the question. Keep the options directly under the question with no blank paragraphs or page break between them.

## Fix 3: wrong or missing correct answers

The converter carries over an answer key when it can see which option is right. Mark the right option with an asterisk, make it bold, or add an inline label such as "(correct)". Use one pattern for the whole Doc. Mixed patterns, or an answer key placed at the end as a list, are easy to miss. If you would rather keep the Doc clean, you can add the key afterwards: the [answer key tool for Google Forms](/tools/answer-key-for-google-form) fills in answers on an existing form, and [how to make an answer key in Google Forms](/blog/how-to-make-an-answer-key-in-google-forms) shows the manual route.

## Fix 4: questions in the wrong order

Multi-column pages and layout tables change the reading order. Switch the page back to a single column and turn layout tables into normal paragraphs. Tables are fine when they hold a real grid, with row labels and column headings, but the [Google Docs converter page](/convert/google-docs-to-google-form) notes that tables may need a manual check.

## Fix 5: missing images

Embedded pictures are flagged for manual review, not guaranteed to carry over. Add them back with the image button on each question in Google Forms. Footnotes and endnotes are stripped as well, so move any note a student needs into the question text.

## Fix 6: wrong question type

The converter infers the type from cues. A list of options becomes multiple choice. Add "(select all that apply)" to get checkboxes, and leave a question with no options to get a short answer or paragraph. A true or false pair becomes a two-option multiple choice question.

## A two-minute pre-check

Before you convert any Doc, scroll through it once and confirm four things: every question starts with a number, every option sits on its own lettered line, every correct answer carries the same marker, and there is no question hidden inside a table or an image. Fixing these in the Doc takes less time than diagnosing a bad conversion afterwards, and it makes later edits easier too.

## Still stuck?

Try the same content from a different route. You can paste the numbered list into the [question importer](/tools/import-questions-to-google-form), which also takes CSV, Excel, Word and PDF, or follow the manual steps in [how to import questions into Google Forms](/blog/how-do-i-import-questions-into-google-forms). For the full walkthrough that works, see [how to convert a Google Doc to a Google Form quiz](/blog/how-to-convert-google-doc-to-google-form-quiz).

On cost: the free plan allows 5 Formswrite Forms per month, and the Formswrite form is the only free export. Exporting to Google Forms is a paid feature, so a form that looks right in the preview but will not export to Google Forms may be a plan issue and not a layout one.

## FAQ

Why does my Google Doc convert to a blank Google Form?

Usually the link is not shared widely enough, or the questions are images. Test the link in a private window and make sure the questions are real text.

Why are the correct answers not set?

No recognised marker was found. Mark the right option with an asterisk, bold text or a "(correct)" label, and use the same pattern for every question.

Can Google Docs convert to Google Forms without an add-on?

Yes. A web converter that takes a link or a file needs no Workspace add-on, so there is nothing to authorise in your Google account.

Does the Doc have to follow a strict template?

There is no fixed template, but a consistent pattern helps: numbered questions, lettered options and one answer marker style. The more regular the Doc, the cleaner the form.
