Fill in the blank also works outside of quizzes, where the goal is honest open input rather than a correct answer:

A sentence starter like these often gets more specific answers than an open question such as "Any feedback?" because the respondent knows what shape of answer you expect.

How to write good fill in the blank questions

Leave out a key word, not a trivial one. "The ____ is the powerhouse of the cell" tests a concept. "The mitochondria ____ the powerhouse of the cell" tests nothing.
One blank per sentence in most cases. Two blanks in a short sentence can leave too little context to work out either answer.
Put the blank at or near the end. Students read the whole context before reaching the gap, which reduces rereading.
Make sure only one answer fits. "George Washington was born in ____" could be a year, a state, or a month. Rewrite to "George Washington was born in the year ____."
Keep blanks the same length. A longer line hints at a longer answer.
Do not lift sentences word for word from the textbook. That tests memorization of a sentence, not understanding.
Decide your accepted answers before you publish. Spelling variants, plurals, abbreviations, and numbers written as words all need a decision.

How to make a fill in the blank question in Google Forms

Google Forms has no dedicated fill in the blank question type, but a Short answer question does the job. Grading is handled by the quiz answer key.

Step 1: Make the form a quiz

Open your form, click Settings, and turn on Make this a quiz. Without this, there is no answer key.

Step 2: Add a Short answer question with the blank in the title

Add a question, choose Short answer, and type the sentence with the blank as the question title, for example: The chemical symbol for gold is ____. Use underscores for the blank.

Step 3: Add every accepted answer to the answer key

Click Answer key, then type the correct answer. Add more accepted answers for reasonable variants, such as "24" and "twenty-four." Short answer matching is literal apart from letter case, so "Amazon River" will not match an accepted answer of "Amazon" unless you add both. Turn on Mark all other answers incorrect if you want anything not on the list scored as wrong automatically, then set the point value.

Step 4: Add response validation where it helps

Click the three-dot menu on the question and choose Response validation. For a numeric blank, choose Number so students cannot type words. Step 5: Preview and test with wrong spellings

Submit a test response with a typo and a variant. If a correct answer is marked wrong, add it to the answer key. After real students submit, you can still correct individual scores in the Responses tab.

Multiple blanks in one sentence

A Google Forms Short answer question has one text box, so it cannot hold two separately graded blanks. Split the sentence into two questions, or use a multiple choice grid or dropdowns with a word bank instead.

Fill in the blank with a word bank in Google Forms

For younger students, list the word bank in the question description and use a Dropdown question with the bank as options. Dropdowns are auto-graded like multiple choice, and there are no spelling problems. For several blanks that share one word bank, a Multiple choice grid with each sentence as a row and the bank words as columns works well.

Cloze format for longer passages

A cloze passage removes several words from a paragraph so students complete it in context. It is common in language teaching and reading comprehension, and some platforms support it natively. Build a variant list from the first class. Look at the answers marked wrong, add the valid ones to the key, and reuse the improved key next time.
Decide on spelling in advance. For a vocabulary test, spelling may be the point. For a science concept, a misspelled correct term probably shows understanding, so accept it.
Use numbers for numeric answers. Number validation removes "24 cm" versus "24" confusion. Put the unit in the question.
