# Employee Training Quiz Maker: Build a Quiz in 7 Steps

In short

To make an employee training quiz, upload the handbook page, slide export or SOP to a quiz maker such as Formswrite (PDF, Word or Google Doc, or just type a topic), let it draft five to fifteen questions with an answer key, edit them against the training, and share the link.

It is written for corporate trainers, HR teams and team leads who need a graded check after a session.

## What an employee training quiz is for

A training quiz answers one question: did the people who attended understand what we wanted them to understand? It is not a school exam and it should not feel like one. Keep the tone practical, use situations from the job, and use the results to decide whether to re-teach a topic, not to rank people.

## Seven steps to a training quiz

1. **Write the objectives first.** An objective is a sentence that starts "After this session, a new hire can..." For example, "...use the returns procedure for a damaged item". If you cannot write the sentence, the session is not ready for a quiz.
2. **Pick a length.** Plan for five to fifteen questions. A quiz after a 45-minute session should take about ten minutes.
3. **Choose question types.** Multiple choice for facts and procedures, true or false for common misconceptions, short answer for judgment calls. Matching suits product knowledge and terminology.
4. **Generate a first draft from your material.** Use the Formswrite steps below to draft questions and an answer key from the handbook page or slide export.
5. **Review each question.** Check that exactly one option is clearly right, that wrong options are plausible and that nothing depends on a detail you did not teach. Delete trick questions.
6. **Set points and feedback.** One point per question is fine. Add a short explanation for the tricky ones so a wrong answer teaches something.
7. **Share and collect.** Send the link in chat or email, or link it from your learning system. See below for the options.

## Example: customer support onboarding quiz

Training material: a two-page guide to handling refund requests.

**Question 1 (multiple choice).** A customer asks for a refund for an item bought 45 days ago. The policy allows refunds within 30 days. What is the best next step?

- A. Refuse and end the chat
- B. Explain the policy and offer the available options, such as store credit if the policy allows it (correct)
- C. Approve it to avoid conflict
- D. Transfer to a random colleague

**Question 2 (true or false).** You may share a customer's order details with anyone who asks for them over the phone. Answer: False.

**Question 3 (short answer).** Describe in two sentences how you would respond to an angry customer whose delivery is late.

These three cover a fact, a rule and a judgment call, which is the mix that tells you the most.

## Ways to deliver the quiz

- **As a Google Form.** Quiz mode grades choices automatically and shows a score on submission. The [Google Form quiz maker](/tools/google-form-quiz-generator) creates this directly from a document.
- **Inside your learning system.** If you use a learning management system, export the quiz in the format it accepts. Formswrite exports to more than 20 platforms, including Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard and Brightspace, and the file formats QTI, GIFT and Aiken. See the guide to [bulk converting Google Docs to LMS quizzes](/blog/bulk-convert-google-docs-to-lms-quizzes-moodle-canvas-blackboard).
- **As a live game.** Formswrite Play runs a converted quiz as a live timed game, which can suit a team session.

## Match the quiz to the kind of training

Different training needs different questions. Use this table to decide before you draft.

| Training type | What to test | Best question types | Suggested length |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Product knowledge | Features, differences, who each is for | Multiple choice, matching | 10 questions |
| Software or tools | Where to find things, the right order of clicks | Multiple choice with screenshots | 8 questions |
| Soft skills such as feedback or customer calls | Judgment in realistic situations | Scenario multiple choice, one short answer | 5 questions |
| Policy refreshers | The rule and the exception | True or false, scenario | 10 questions |
| Manager training | Decisions and trade-offs | Short answer scored with a rubric | 4 questions |

Short-answer questions take longer to mark. The [AI grader for Google Forms](/tools/ai-grader-for-google-forms) can read them for you, and you can review its marks before sharing results.

## What Formswrite supports for training quizzes

- **Sources:** PDF, Word, Google Docs, or a typed topic.
- **Output:** a quiz with an answer key, shareable as a Formswrite Form on the free plan (5 per month).
- **Exports on paid plans:** Google Forms, Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Schoology, Brightspace (D2L), Sakai, NEO LMS, Learn365, itslearning, LearnDash, Kahoot, Quizizz, Blooket, Gimkit, Socrative, QTI 2.1 and 2.2, H5P, GIFT and Aiken.
- **Live use:** Formswrite Play runs a converted quiz as a timed game.

## Reading the results

Open the response summary after the first group has taken the quiz.

- A question most people got wrong is usually a training problem, not a people problem. Revisit the slide or the procedure.
- A question everyone got right may be too easy. Keep it only if it covers something critical.
- A wide spread of total scores suggests the group started at different levels. Consider a pre-quiz next time.

## Keep it fresh

Reuse the same questions for a new cohort, but replace a few each quarter so answers do not circulate. When a procedure changes, update the question the same day. An old question that tests a retired rule does more harm than no quiz.

## Build it in Formswrite, step by step

This is the path for a trainer or team lead starting from the handbook page or slide export.

1. Open the [AI quiz generator](/tools/quiz-generator) and upload the handbook page or slide export. It accepts a PDF, a Word file or a Google Doc, or you can type a topic instead.
2. Choose the question types you want, such as multiple choice, true or false and short answer, and generate the quiz. It comes with an answer key.
3. Read every question. Fix wording, delete anything your source does not state and check each marked answer.
4. Edit the answer key until every question has exactly one clearly correct answer.
5. Share the quiz link, or export it to Google Forms or your learning platform. Exports are part of the paid plans, and the free plan lets you create 5 Formswrite Forms a month.

## FAQ

Should a training quiz be graded pass or fail?

It depends on the topic. Safety or compliance content often needs a pass mark. For general product training, a score with feedback is usually enough, and a low score leads to a refresher instead of a penalty.

Can I make a quiz from a PowerPoint or PDF?

Yes. Export the slides to PDF, or copy the text into a Word or Google Doc, upload it to the quiz generator and review the questions it drafts.

Is there a free way to make a training quiz?

The free plan lets you create 5 Formswrite Forms a month. Exporting to Google Forms and other platforms needs a paid plan.

How often should I change the questions?

Replace a few each quarter and update any question the same day its procedure changes.
