# Convert DOCX to Google Forms Quiz: Images, Math and Tables

In short

A plain Word quiz of numbered questions and lettered choices converts almost untouched. A quiz with diagrams, equations or tables needs a short finishing pass, because Google Forms handles each of those differently from Word. This guide shows what to expect for each element and how to rebuild what does not carry over.

If your quiz is text only, the shorter walkthrough is [convert a Word document to a Google Form](/blog/convert-word-doc-to-google-form-online-free-in-1-click). This page is for the harder files: science diagrams, maths papers and matching tables.

## What each element becomes

| Element in the DOCX | Result | What you do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Question text, lettered choices | Questions and options | Nothing |
| Table with row and column labels | Grid question | Check labels and answer |
| Table used for layout or matching | May need review | Rebuild as grid or dropdowns |
| Picture or diagram | Review advised | Re-add with the image button |
| Equation Editor object | Flagged | Retype as text or add as an image |
| SmartArt | Skipped | Describe in text or add an image |
| Macros | Ignored | Nothing, questions still extracted |

The [Word to Google Form converter](/convert/word-to-google-form) page lists the same behaviour for each element.

## Images and diagrams

Google Forms lets you attach an image to a question or to an answer option, but it does not read pictures out of a document the way it reads text. Treat every image as something to confirm. Open the converted form, find each question that had a figure, and use the image button to add it again. Export the figure from Word first (right-click the picture, Save as Picture) so you have a clean file.

Add alt text while you are there. It helps screen reader users and keeps the question usable if the image fails to load.

## Equations and math

Google Forms has no built-in equation editor, so there is no one-click route for a maths quiz. You have three practical choices:

1. **Plain text notation** for simple expressions: "3x + 5 = 20", "x squared", "square root of 49". This is quick, and it keeps the question searchable and readable by screen readers.
2. **An image of the equation** for fractions, integrals or anything layout-heavy. Screenshot it from Word at a high zoom, then attach it to the question.
3. **Images for the answer choices** as well, when the options are expressions that cannot be typed cleanly.

Whichever you choose, keep the equation style the same across the whole quiz. Our guide to a [Google Form math quiz](/blog/google-form-math-quiz) goes deeper on the formatting options.

## Tables

Word tables show up in quizzes in two ways. A rating or matching table, with items down the side and levels across the top, maps to a Google Forms grid, where each row is one item and the columns are the choices. That converts well. A table used only to lay out text, such as a two-column layout of questions, can confuse the reading order. If the preview shows questions in a strange sequence, flatten those tables to normal paragraphs in Word and convert again.

## A checklist before you upload

1. Accept all tracked changes, so deleted text does not leak into questions.
2. Mark the correct answer on each question with an asterisk, bold text or an "Answer:" line.
3. Replace layout tables with plain paragraphs.
4. Keep each question and its options together, with no page-break artefacts between them.
5. Save a copy so you can reconvert quickly if you edit the original.

## Upload, review, finish

Upload the file to the converter, read through the preview, and export. Then work through the form in this order: images, equations, grids, then the answer key. Finish by setting the point values and turning on quiz mode in Google Forms, and test the form as a student.

Cost, plainly: the free plan allows 5 Formswrite Forms per month and the Formswrite form is the only free export. Exporting to Google Forms needs a paid plan. If you have many files, the [question importer](/tools/import-questions-to-google-form) takes Word, PDF, spreadsheets and pasted text.

## FAQ

Can I convert a Word quiz with pictures to Google Forms?

Yes, but plan to check the pictures. Text, options and structure convert, while images and diagram objects are flagged for review, so re-add them to the matching questions in Google Forms.

How do I put equations in a Google Form?

Google Forms has no equation editor. Use plain text for simple expressions and an image for complex ones, and use the same approach across the whole quiz.

Why do my Word tables look wrong after converting?

Tables used only for layout can change the reading order of the questions. Convert them to normal paragraphs in Word, then convert again. Tables with row and column labels become grid questions.

Does the converter keep my answer key?

It reads answers you mark with an asterisk, bold text or an answer line and sets them as the key. Check the key on every question, because a missed marker leaves a question with no answer.

Is there a size limit for the DOCX file?

This guide does not state one, because limits can change. Large files with many embedded images are slower to read, so split a very long exam into sections and convert each part.
