# AI Kahoot Maker: Kahoot AI vs Making One From a Document

In short

There are two ways to make a kahoot with AI. You can use Kahoot's own AI tools inside the creator, which generate a kahoot from a topic, PDF, Wikipedia article, web page or slides.

## What Kahoot's AI tools do

Kahoot's help center page "How to use Kahoot! AI tools" (updated October 8, 2026) says the tools are powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 and let you build a full kahoot in seconds, with a choice of difficulty and tone. The listed inputs are:

- A topic you type, such as Dog breeds or Space
- An uploaded PDF
- A Wikipedia article title
- A web page URL
- Existing slides you import
- Department for Education materials, for teachers in Great Britain

You can also generate single questions for an existing kahoot from a topic, PDF or URL, use the AI Assistant (the sparkle icon) for slide by slide suggestions, and generate images. The help center adds that kahoots can be built through ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants using Kahoot's MCP server.

## Limits worth knowing

- **Plan dependent.** Kahoot says availability depends on your plan, so check the pricing page for school, higher ed, personal, student or business.
- **Age rule.** Students under 16 are not permitted to use the AI tools.
- **You own the accuracy.** Kahoot reminds authors that AI can be inaccurate or biased and that you remain responsible for the content.
- **Privacy.** Kahoot states that prompts and uploaded documents are processed transiently and not used to train its models.

## When to start from your own document instead

An AI that invents questions from a topic gives you generic items. A teacher with a unit test or a textbook chapter PDF, or a trainer with a compliance handout, usually wants those exact questions, in that order, with the right answers marked. In that case the job is conversion, not generation.

Formswrite reads a PDF, Word file, Google Doc, Excel or Google Sheet, finds each question and correct answer (scanned PDFs included), and prepares the result for Kahoot. It can also generate new quizzes with AI when you do not have questions yet. Exporting to Kahoot is a paid feature, and the free plan only exports Formswrite Forms.

## Which route should you pick

| Situation | Better route |
| --- | --- |
| Idea but no questions | Kahoot's built-in AI from a topic |
| Existing test or worksheet with an answer key | Convert the document so your wording is kept |
| Many files at once | Bulk conversion |

## Using ChatGPT or Claude

Kahoot's help center also describes connecting external assistants to Kahoot through its MCP server, and has a separate guide named "How to create kahoots with ChatGPT". If you already draft quizzes in a chat assistant, that route saves the copy and paste, though it carries the same plan and accuracy caveats as the built-in tools.

## Steps: build a kahoot from a document

1. Collect the questions in a PDF, Word file, Google Doc or spreadsheet.
2. Upload the file to Formswrite and review the detected questions and answers.
3. Fix any question the reader misread, such as a wrapped line or a table.
4. Choose Kahoot as the export target.
5. Import the file in Kahoot's creator, then add images and music there.

If your source is a spreadsheet, check the exact column and limit rules in the [Kahoot spreadsheet template guide](/blog/kahoot-spreadsheet-template). The step by step for PDFs is in [how to turn your PDF into a Kahoot quiz](/blog/how-to-turn-your-pdf-into-a-kahoot-quiz), and for Word files in [how to turn your Word document into a Kahoot quiz](/blog/how-to-turn-your-word-document-into-a-kahoot-quiz). If you are new to the platform, [how to make a Kahoot](/blog/how-to-make-a-kahoot) starts from zero, and the [PDF to Kahoot converter page](/product/documents-to-kahoot) lists supported formats. If you want a live game without Kahoot, see [Formswrite Play](/blog/formswrite-play-interactive-classroom-games-kahoot-alternative).

Whichever route you take, read every question once before you play.

## FAQ

Is Kahoot's AI maker free?

Kahoot says AI tool availability depends on your plan, so it is not guaranteed on every account. Check the pricing page for your type of account before you plan a lesson around it.

Can I make a kahoot from a PDF with AI?

Yes. Kahoot's AI can build a kahoot from an uploaded PDF, and a converter such as Formswrite can turn a PDF of existing questions into a Kahoot-ready file. The first writes new questions, the second keeps yours.

Can students under 16 use Kahoot AI?

No. Kahoot's help center says students under 16 years old are not permitted to use the AI tools because of privacy regulations.

Does Kahoot use my uploaded documents to train its AI?

Kahoot states that prompts and uploaded documents are processed transiently to fulfil the request and are not stored or used to train or fine-tune its models.
